Problem

The registration process for NYU's Albert is notoriously tricky. Current students typically cite a complicated and unclear registration process and unintuitive interface as reasons why. At NYU it is also up to schools and departments themselves to assist students with the registration process. Inevitably, this has led to a relatively non-uniform and fragmented approach to assisting students with registration.

Goal

We would like to design learning solutions targeted specifically at Master’s students in the Educational Communication and Technology program (our program). The learning experience will help them know what courses to choose and enable them to successfully register for their classes without any hiccups.

Final Solutions

Our learning journey includes three parts: an e-learning module, a slack channel, and two times of online check-ins.

1 / Albert registration tutorial on Rise 360

There are four modules in total from reviewing degree requirements to a step-by-step Albert course registration tutorial and each of them includes an assessment at the end. The design follows Mayer’s multimedia design principles, making sure the visual aids and text are relative and adjacent. The last module incorporates Edpuzzle instruction videos recorded by us guiding course search on Albert. Edpuzzle encourages learners to answer a few questions before continuing to watch, elevating the engagement.

2 / Slack channel for course registration supports

Once students finish the Albert Registration Tutorial, they will have access to our Slack community: #help-ect-registration-questions. This channel will have some current ECT students and faculty facilitate Q&A.

3 / Online panels to answer further questions

2 times of online check-ins will be launched on Zoom. Current program students or professors will lead the presentation about the whole registration process and encourage new students to take the e-learning module. After the presentation, a Q&A session will be followed for students to ask their final questions.

Update

The Albert learning registration 101 is launched recently! We will see how it goes in the following weeks. After the two sessions, we will invite some students to gather feedback and send out surveys to gather quantative data. Finally, we will instill insights for better improvement.
